Capital District Community Gardens awarded $30K

The Capital District Community Gardens has been awarded $30,000 from the Conservation Partnership Program.

The Conservation Partnership program is funded by The NYS Environmental Protection Fund and administered by The Land Trust Alliance of NYS.

“Capital District Community Gardens is grateful for The Conservation Partnership Program’s invaluable support for our mission to nourish healthy communities by providing access to fresh food and green spaces for all,” said CDCG’s Executive Director Amy Klein in a statement. “Protecting public health starts with caring for the land and water that is used to nourish residents and it is an honor to partner with the many other organizations working toward this common goal with The Conservation Partnership Program’s support.”

Mortorcycle ride for cancer

ALTAMONT - On Saturday, May 12, there will be a charity motorcycle ride from VFW 8692 on Rt 155 to  VFW 7062 on Mill Sreet.

The cost is $20 a bike and is rain or shine. There will also be an end of run party at VFW 7062.

Ride to benefit Blue Friday New York to take place Saturday

The Blue Friday New York Fallen Officer Memorial Ride will take place on Saturday, May 5 and will cover many areas in the Capital Region.

The ride will go over 94 miles and will kick off from Spizie’s Harley-Davidson on Central Avenue in Colonie at 11:30 a.m. The riders will then go to Herba Motors on Route 30 in Amsterdam, followed by Adirondack Harley-Davidson on Route 29 in Amsterdam.

Registration will be available at all three locations and will begin at 9 a.m. The ride will travel through Albany, Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton and Saratoga counties and will end at the Bethlehem Town Park on Route 32 in Bethlehem at 2 p.m.

Donations for the ride will be $25/driver and $15/rider and will include a lunch at the Bethlehem Town Park. Anyone can attend the lunch for a $10 donation and live music will be provided by Kevin and Katie McKrell and others.

Upper Union Street Schenectady Farmers' Market to begin May 5

The Upper Union Street Schenectady Farmers’ Market will open on Saturday, May 5 in the public parking lot off of Woodland Avenue in Schenectady.

The market’s hours are Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May until October.

“The Upper Union Street Farmers’ Market continues to thrive within a scale appropriate to our district,” said Chris DiCocco, President of the Upper Union Street BID.  “It’s a great fit, reflecting the independent, personal nature of our business roster.”

In the early season, bedding plants, mesclun mix, garlic, herbs, baked goods, jams, cheeses, hanging baskets, perennials, free range chicken, ducks and other meats, and herbal balms and remedies are available.

For safety reasons, people who attend the market are asked to access the parking lot from the Dean Street entrance during the Saturday morning market hours.

Contestant with local ties to compete in 'The Voice' semifinals

The semifinals of NBC's “The Voice” begin Monday night and one of the contestants has local ties to the area.

Finalist Tony Lucca's grandfather and his uncles live in Niskayuna. His dad lives in Rotterdam and graduated from Mohanasen High School.

Tony's family is planning a party on May 1 at the Van Dyck Lounge in Schenectady to watch the results.

The semifinals begin at 8 p.m. on NewsChannel 13.

Champagne on the Park tickets now on sale

ALBANY - The Lark Street Business Improvement District's annual fundraiser will be held on Thursday, May 10.

Champagne on the Park is a fundraiser that supports the year-round efforts if the Lark Street BID to continue the growth of the economic and urban development and sustainability of this unique neighborhood through programs including neighborhood safety and marketing.

Police Officer's Memorial Motorcycle-Ride to take place May 5

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office will join with other law enforcement agencies from local counties to participate in a 94 mile Police Officer’s Memorial Motorcycle-Ride. The ride is set for Saturday, May 5.

The First Fallen Officer’s Memorial Ride will be held rain or shine and is being held by Blue Friday of New York and Blue Knights New York 24.

The ride will cover Albany, Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton and Saratoga counties and will be open to the public. It will be a police-escorted motorcycle ride.
