Cars targeted by debris on I-890 | Crime

SCHENECTADY -  Police said a stretch of Interstate 890 has undergone an aerial assault over the past three days, with debris thrown at unsuspecting drivers in the night most likely from overpasses or from the sides of the road.

It's already made nearby resident Dorothy Clark nervous about driving after dark.

"I don't want to get hit there too when I go under. I don't want to get hit by rocks," said Clark, who uses the route to from home to work.

Police said Monday that they don't know what the suspects are using to throw on the cars because the motorists didn't stop after being hit. But they're guessing it's large rocks or pieces of concrete.

"Damage has been to the sides of the vehicles which leads us to believe it may be coming from the banks of the road. As well as windshields being smashed out," said Lt. Mark McCraken, police spokesperson.

While there haven't been injuries reported yet, McCraken added it can lead to a fatality if it's not stopped.

"Potentially somebody could die from it. Individuals could be struck by something heavy enough to go though the windshield or they involved in a motor vehicle accident and perish from injuries that may be sustained," he said.

Police said one or more suspects could be hiding in wooded areas and hard to spot. That makes it all the more treacherous for motorists going at speeds up to 55 miles per hour.

"You could get smash your car up get killed especially people with little kids into the car and don't see anything coming. Have to stop it," said Ray Manuli, a Scotia resident.

"Kids think it's funny, but it's not funny at all. Somebody could get hurt," said Clark.
