Police question Schenectady robbery victim's story

SCHENECTADY – Police said 44-year-old James Johnson of Schenectady claimed he was walking out of the emergency department at the McClellan Street campus of Ellis Health Center Monday, when he was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight.

He reportedly told police that he handed the robber couple hundred dollars in cash, a prescription order, and some prescription drugs. And that the robber took off in a Nissan Maxima.

Police began a search for the alleged suspect. The health center began reviewing its surveillance camera tapes for evidence. But police said, under questioning, the victim abruptly decided not to cooperate. And then things took a unique turn.

"He filed his police report, left, went over to CVS on Eastern Parkway, shop-lifted and was taken into custody," said Lt. Mark McCracken.

Johnson was brought back to the police station and under arrest for shoplifting. Police said they are taking a closer look at his story, and that it's possible he might face more serious charges.

"Due to the turn of events and his uncooperative, him being uncooperative, may lead us to believe that he has not been forthcoming with all the information. If we are able to determine that he lied about the incident, he could face criminal charges," McCracken said.

A spokesperson with Ellis Health Center said they take any safety allegation seriously, and are cooperating with police.

The Center is also stepping up security patrols.
