Authorities round up 23 drug suspects in Schenectady raid | Crime
SCHENECTADY - Twenty-three drug suspects were rounded up in an early-morning Schenectady raid. U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian says they've struck at the heart of the Uptown Gunners Gang.
Four more suspects are being sought.
The roundup is very similar to, but larger than, a gang raid carried out 10 months ago in a neighboring part of Schenectady.
Tuesday's roundup is the result of a five-month investigation carried out last year. It focused on an area of Schenectady roughly bordered by Interstate 890 on the south, Brandywine Avenue on the west and Eastern Avenue on the north.
Authorities say this is the tenth in a series of gang prosecutions carried out by the feds in this region since 2003.
Ten months ago they hit the Four Block Gang in the western part of Schenectady's Hamilton Hill.
In both roundups investigators used a variety of methods to build their case.
Officials said they expect the gang drug roundup should significantly reduce instances of violence and gunfire in the area.
But as Schenectady County District Attorney Bob Carney put it, we can't prosecute our way out of these problems.
