Women's Career Fair to take place May 19

A Women’s Career Fair will take place on Saturday, May 19 at Northeast Parent & Child Society Career Development Center. The center is located at 530 Franklin Street in Schenectady.

There will be over 25 employers on-site, tips and workshops, door prizes and giveaways, and networking opportunities.

New Books Sandwiched In program announced for May 21

New Books Sandwiched In program announced for May 21

Friends of the Schenectady County Public Library will offer a new series of Books Sandwiched In programs at the Central Library in Schenectady.

Dr. Thomas Kelly will review “Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with Britain in its Darkest, Finest Hour,” by Lynne Olson on May 21.

The programs are open to the public and are held in the McChesney Room. They begin at 12 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and beverages will be available for a nominal fee.

Central Library is located at 99 Clinton Street in Schenectady.

Valor Day to honor those who work for Schenectady Police Department

Schenectady Police Department has announced a Valor Day ceremony that will be held on Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m.

The ceremony will recognize the hard work and sacrifices made by the men and women of the department.

It will take place at the GE Theater at Proctors.

Third Annual Electric City Couture Fashion Show to be held May 18

The Third Annual Electric City Couture Fashion Show will be held on Friday, May 18 in the GE Theatre at Proctors. The event will begin at 7 p.m.

The show will highlight new and established local designers. According to Proctors, the event was created and produced in conjunction with the fifth anniversary of Schenectady Art Night. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

The event’s “creative architects” are locally known designers Joleen Button and Katie Pray. Master of ceremony for the event will be Marisa Jacques of YNN and the marketing director is Richard Lovrich.

The fashion competition –Best of Broadway- will be judged by Capital Region judges who’s design knowledge ranges from modeling to marketing.

Beauty and the Beast to come to Proctors

Beauty and the Beast to come to Proctors

The Mainstage at Proctors will welcome “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” beginning May 15 through May 20.

The classic love story will come to life onstage with songs like “Be Our Guest,” “Change In Me,” and “Gaston.” The show is based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature film and the show has been seen by 35 million people around the world.

The show runs for 130 minutes with one intermission. Ticket prices range from $20 to $90. Click here for more information on the show.

Safety Day to take place May 12

Safety Day to take place May 12

Safety Day will take place on Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rotterdam Square Mall located on 93 West Campbell Road in the Town of Rotterdam.

Schenectady County’s Local Police Agencies will conduct demonstrations and they will distribute educational materials relevant to traffic safety issues. These issues include, distracted driving, child safety seats and motorcycle safety.

Operation Safe Child IDs will be provided for no cost and people will be able to meet the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit.

Babysitter's Training to be held by Red Cross

Babysitter's Training to be held by Red Cross

The American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region (ARCNENY) will offer Babysitter’s Training to provide kids between 11 and 15 knowledge and skills they need to care for young children.

According to a statement, the course teaches kids how to care for infants and children, how to handle emergency situations, recognize safety and hygiene issues and communicate with parents.

"Spring and summer are the perfect times to take our Babysitter's Training, we are scheduling several dates between now and the fall," said Caroline Boardman, Communications Director for ARCNENY in a statement. "This course not only provides kids with an opportunity to become responsible caregivers, but more importantly, it prepares them to be good leaders, role models and budding entrepreneurs."

All training courses will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include a lunch break. Students should dress in comfortable clothing and bring a pen or pencil and a lunch.
