Applications available for DEC Environmental Education Summer Camps

The application is now posted online for the Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Education Summer Camps.

The DEC Environmental Education Camps offer campers experiences in sportsman education, games, lessons, hands-on activities, swimming, hiking, canoeing and other outdoor activities. Through these activities, campers will learn about forests, water quality, nature and more.

There are four different camps kids can attend, Camp Colby, Camp DeBruce, Camp Rushford and Camp Pack Forest. Campers will participate in discovery groups and will complete six lessons. These lessons include group dynamics, explorations of different habitats and human impacts on the environment.  Science, problem solving, games, journal keeping and wildlife activities are also part of what campers will experience.

Camp starts on July 1, 2012 and goes until August 18, 2012. Campers can attend multiple times during the seven, week-long sessions.

Babysitter's Training to be held by Red Cross

The American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region (ARCNENY) will offer Babysitter’s Training to provide kids between 11 and 15 knowledge and skills they need to care for young children.

According to a statement, the course teaches kids how to care for infants and children, how to handle emergency situations, recognize safety and hygiene issues and communicate with parents.

"Spring and summer are the perfect times to take our Babysitter's Training, we are scheduling several dates between now and the fall," said Caroline Boardman, Communications Director for ARCNENY in a statement. "This course not only provides kids with an opportunity to become responsible caregivers, but more importantly, it prepares them to be good leaders, role models and budding entrepreneurs."

All training courses will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include a lunch break. Students should dress in comfortable clothing and bring a pen or pencil and a lunch.

Niskayuna to host 2012 NYS Scholastic Rowing Association Section II Championships

Niskayuna to host 2012 NYS Scholastic Rowing Association Section II Championships

The 2012 New York State Scholastic Rowing Association Section II Championships will take place on the Mohawk River and will be hosted by Niskayuna and Friends of Niskayuna Rowing this weekend.

According to a statement, more than 1,000 rowers from around the region will come May 5 through May 6 for NYS Scholastic Rowing Association Section II Championships.

The championships will take place on the Mohawk River near the Rexford Bridge and racing will take place between 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Parking will be available at the Jewish Community Center of Schenectady on Balltown Road and there will be a shuttle bus taking people to the spectator area.

Child Care available for Memphis shows

SCHENECTADY - Having trouble finding a sitter to watch the little ones so you can enjoy a Tony Award winning musical? A new program from Proctors and the Schenectady Branch of the Capital District YMCA hopes to end that.

YMCA Parents Night Out is a convenient, affordable, and safe solution. Through the program parents can sign up for childcare at the new Downtown Y while they attend events at Proctors State Street Complex.

SCPL to host Baby Lap Time

SCPL to host Baby Lap Time

The Schenectady County Public Library will hold a Baby Lap Time on Thursday, April 12 at 9:30 a.m.

The Baby Lap Time is a carefully prepared shared experience for children under two and their caregiver. The librarian will share stories, songs, finger plays and activities involving music and movement.

According to SCPL, there is much research that shows how early literacy experiences can help build important connections in young children.

Baby Lap Time is for children birth to 23 months of age, with a caregiver.

TVHS students visit Chinese destinations and begin classes

A group of Tech Valley High School students began classes at the Tianjin High School No. 41 in China on Thursday. The group spent time visiting key Chinese destinations and cultural sites.

"We enjoyed an amazing tour of Beijing and we received the warmest welcome ceremony ever at our sister school in Tianjin," said TVHS Teacher Sophia Hsia in a statement. "Everyone was touched. The students were so excited being with the kids at Tianjin and they are ready to learn more about Chinese culture, language and getting to know the people well here."

The delegation will spend one week taking classes at Tianjin High School No. 41 before coming back to Tech Valley High School on April 13.

SCCC announces 2012 commencement keynote speaker

SCCC announces 2012 commencement keynote speaker

Schenectady County Community College has announced the keynote speaker for commencement 2012.

Alain E. Kaloyeros, Ph.D., Professor and Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany, will serve as the keynote speaker and will address graduates, faculty, staff and guests at the May 24 commencement. Commencement will start at 4 p.m. at Proctors.

According to a statement, Kaloyeros has been involved in the development and implementation of New York’s high tech strategy to become a leader in the nanotechnology driven economy.

He earned his Ph. D. in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1987. He has co-authored 150 articles, contributed to seven books and holds 13 U.S. patents. He has also received awards including the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Presidential Young Investigator Award and the NSF Research Initiation Award.
