Jumpin' Jack's to reopen

It's a good sign that nicer weather is on the way when Jumpin' Jack's owner Mark Lansing gets ready to open his doors for business. Lansing says the place is about 90 percent prepared to open up and they will be ready by March 29.

For Lansing, opening day has been a very special moment for decades. Except this year, just opening up period will be special. The burger and ice cream joint was forced to close one week early last summer after the Mohawk River went over its banks and flooded the area. Jumpin' Jack's was underwater.

Lansing has been cleaning since last August. It has been an overwhelming and costly task, since the flood left behind lots of debris and a muddy mess. He says he plans to install some new equipment, do some painting and fine tune everything.

SCPL to host computer class Tuesday

SCPL to host computer class Tuesday

A computer class will be held at the Schenectady County Public Library on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The class will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Central Library in the Technology Room. This class is for beginners and will go over some basics of using computers.

There is no experience necessary and those who sign up for the class will not be able to take an intermediate level class until February.

Registration began Dec. 19, 2011. You must have a valid SCPL card to register.

Groups see progress in plugging NY trail's gaps

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A pair of parks and trails advocacy groups says progress is being made to close the five remaining gaps in the 365-mile Erie Canalway Trail connecting Albany and Buffalo.     

A new report by the Canalway Trails Association New York and Parks and Trails New York says the Erie Canalway Trail is 75 percent complete. When the last remaining gaps are closed, the groups say the continuous off-road trail will see hundreds of thousands of additional users each year, bringing an economic boost to more than 200 communities along the Erie Canal corridor.

SCPL to offer Internet Searching class

SCPL to offer Internet Searching class

On Thursday, Dec. 15 there will be an Intermediate Class: Internet Searching at the Schenectady County Public Library.

The class will go from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and will go over how to search for information on the Internet. A prerequisite for the class is Internet Basics. The class is for people who are very familiar with the mouse and the keyboard of a computer.

Participants must have a valid SCPL card to register and the class will be at the Central Library in the Technology Room.

Erie Canal inspected for Irene damage

An autumn inspection of the Erie Canal will take place today -- and it will be anything but routine.

Portions of the canal system suffered heavy damage in Tropical Storm Irene.

New York State Canals Director Brian Stratton will visit seven locks in Schenectady and Saratoga counties aboard a canal tugboat.
