Run 4 Your Life to take place March 31 in Schenectady

Run 4 Your Life to take place March 31 in Schenectady

The Third Annual Run 4 Your Life is set for Saturday, March 31 in Schenectady’s Central Park.

The event is being organized by Schenectady Firefighter Lt. Brian Demarest and he created the run because he learned that heart attack following a response to a fire was the leading cause of death among firefighters.

“At the age of 42, I was looking to lose a few pounds, lower my cholesterol level and improve my cardiovascular endurance,” said Demarest in a statement. “I also wanted to lead by example and promote something that all of my colleagues could do, no matter what level of fitness you are. If this event can fund some research that will help us figure out how to prevent, treat or cure heart disease, that’s even better, so we decided it should benefit the American Heart Association.”

Demarest is now an avid runner and triathelete. During the first year of Run 4 Your Life, the run raised $5,000 and last year it raised $10,000.

Snowmobilers reminded to be safe on the trail

Snowmobilers reminded to be safe on the trail

The New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) is reminding people to ride safely during the winter months. Coming off the heels of International Snowmobile Safety Week, riders are being reminded to keep it fun, but safe while on the trail.

“We remind snowmobilers to take extra caution in the beginning of the season with low snow depths in many parts of the state,”said Dominic Jacangelo, executive director of NYSSA. “While the number of accidents continues to decrease, inexperience and excess speed are major contributors, it is best to throttle back and take the extra minute to maintain control during your ride. Expect the unexpected.”

The NYSSA suggests that riders reach out to their local club for information on trails before they ride. Due to flooding brought on by Tropical storms Irene and Lee some trails may have changed.
